Amy Winehouse’s father has been left “completely devastated” after the singer was found dead at her London home on Saturday.
Mitch Winehouse was in the U.S. when he learned the tragic news and promptly called off his gig at New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club on Monday to be with family in the U.K.
The former taxi driver told reporters of his heartbreak before boarding a plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport to head home.
He said, “This isn’t real. I’m completely devastated. I’m coming home. I have to be with Amy. I can’t crack up (lose control of his emotions) for her sake. My family need me.”
Amy’s mom Janis has also spoken out after her daughter’s death, admitting the 27 year old seemed “out of it” when they last saw each other on Friday night and remembering her final words: “I love you, mum.”
Janis recalls, “They are the words I will always treasure and always remember Amy by… She seemed out of it (on Friday). But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me.”
