Concert Picks: Sonny and the Sunsets, Paperdoll, The Ladybug Transistor…

Written on July 10, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

While the weather does its fickle thing and wanders around somewhere between severe humidity and thunder-and-lightning storm as it tends to do this part of the summer, we suggest going the way of the middle ground and choosing an activity that will keep you centered, mellow, and in a venue that has central A/C. Of course our picks for the weekend are all over the place, nothing new there from hard noise rock to folk-and-percussion styles, to mellow pop punk, theres a little bit of  something for everyone. Check them out below

  • Sonny and the Sunsets | Friday, July 8 | 8:30 pm | 18+ | $10 | The Echo, Los Angeles, CA Map | Like something out of one of the most genuine music eras namely, the sixties this San Francisco-based band in particular has a kind of raw and cool edge well-displayed on their latest album, Tomorrow is Alright (on which songwriter Sonny Smith is a master at conveying the human condition in ways emotion- and melodic-friendly) -  that would probably be best not to be duplicated by others. Oh were sold, we just didnt have to be so ultra convinced. With Wounded Lion and Dinosaur Feathers Buy Tickets
  • Hex Machine | Friday, July 8 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | Union Pool, Brooklyn, NY Map | Noise rock sounds about right; there is so much energy contained within and emitted by the Richmond, Virginia-based band that were not exactly sure what to do with it all. Gotta love the consistency factor, though; from one song to the next there is no other option but to pay attention and rock out simultaneously. With Wizardry, Bad Dream, Kevin Hufnagel tickets available at the door.
  • Best Coast | Saturday, July 9 | 6:00 pm | Free | The Getty, Los Angeles, CA Map | Earning a deserved stamp as one of our Favs last year, Best Coast is quite obviously the epitome of dreamy indie surf rock with a sharp glittering edge. Since last year, actually, weve been trying to figure a name for power-music-making-duo Bethany Cosentino and Bob Bruno a la Brangelina or TomKat Bethanbob?  Cosenbruno? It has come to this, yes, and theres nothing you can do about it except go along with it, preferably in a swaying, rhythmic motion.
  • Paperdoll | Saturday, July 9 | 10:15 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY Map | Consider just this once replacing your late-night frozen yogurt run with a late-night music run, brought to you in part by Paperdoll. Serving up high energy by way of percussion met with mellow vocal melodies and a one-two guitar punch on both counts, the New York-by-way-of-New Jersey-based band, having just returned from the Shanghai World Expo, takes pop punk to a level worth exploring. With Apollo Run Buy Tickets
  • The Ladybug Transistor | Sunday, July 10 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $10 in advance, $12 day of show | Schubas, Chicago, IL Map | The Brooklyn-based so-termed pop outfit is experienced in their element, so much so that the term pop almost doesnt seem to be wholly apropos. Theirs is a smart, layered, experimental, classic technique that has not so coincidentally contributed to the production of six chew-thoroughly-before-you-swallow albums for now, at least. With Tammar, Tiny Fireflies Buy Tickets

Those are our picks and were sticking to em. Whos on your To See List this weekend?
