Concert Picks: Spectre Folk, Les Savy Fav, Lucinda Black Bear…

Written on January 30, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

All right, here it goes – time flying by uber fast, that is. After this weekend, January is basically over, which will soon mean candy hearts, teddy bears, and fancy dinners for whoever it is that holds residency in that special place in your heart. And if that someone is actually someone else this year, we say go ahead and owe yourself one before the pressure gets to be too much. If not, well then, business as usual. Experimental, ambient, pop, punk, folk… night out, anyone? Check out our picks of the weekend below:

  • Spectre Folk | Friday, January 28 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $7 | Coco 66, New York, NY – Map | Magik Markers drummer Pete Nolan’s side project is quite possibly the definition of ambient dream-noise indie rock (okay, we made up the phrase). The Brooklyn-based musician has been pumping out the albums via his label, Arbitrary Signs, the latest to be released this March, entitled The Blackest Medicine, Vol. 2. With Phantom Family Halo, Hubble and Ancient Ocean – click here for more information, or call (718) 389-7392.
  • Les Savy Fav | Friday, January 28 | 8:30 pm | 18+ | $17 | The Echoplex, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Oh, how we love Les Savy Fav here at BeatCrave. Tonight is the post-punk rockers’ last night in the states before heading to Australia, the UK, and then some (in support of their latest album, Root for Ruin) isn’t enough to get you out tonight – along with our almost obscene fixation with them – then we don’t know what else to do for you. Except feel lots and lots of pity. With Dirt Dress - Buy Tickets
  • Lost in Trees | Saturday, January 29 | 8:00 pm | $15 | Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, IL – Map | Adhering to what would classify their sound as “folk” – for everyone has an epic story to tell – Lost in Trees takes care to mix in charming, forward, and vulnerable attitudes along with it. Never standard, and from what we can tell, influenced by the traditional, the classical, and the modern, they’ve got it more than just right. With Cheyenne Marie Maze – Buy Tickets
  • Fol Chen | Saturday, January 29 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The Highland Park, Calif.-based simply unclassifiable outfit delivers a sound and style that would be all pop and no surprise if it weren’t for… well, the plentiful surprises. They’ve the talent to cross genres and eras while staying charged, current, and fluid. We’re of the many who believe that smart, groovy, experimental pop (that is more about the music than the front man or woman) will always be a flavor worth more than mere consideration. Translation: We like. Like, a lot. With Darwin Deez - Buy Tickets
  • Lucinda Black Bear | Sunday, January 30 | 7:00 pm | 21+  | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY – Map | Brooklyn-based avant-garde style, comprised of cushy orchestrations – elaborate string accompaniment included (piano, cello, and violin, please) – and lyrics that span from the fanciful and animated to the haunted and bleak. This is Lucinda Black Bear, and all the better to line the creative and or/ inspiring instances life throws at us – if you want to read that deeply into it, that is. (We do and have.) With Kerry Kennedy, Bronze and Anything Maria – Buy Tickets

Well, as per usual, those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To-See List this weekend?
