Concert Picks: We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves, The Ex, Snowmine…

Written on March 20, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

We love music. (Couldn’t tell already?) And we love the weekend. Two of our favorite things, The weekend is just that courteous, arriving just in time for you to move about in your seat or on the floor and therefore sweat yesterday’s green beer, green glitter, and chocolate coins out of your system. As per usual, we’ve compiled what we consider a more-than-awesome line up for you to wile some of your hard-earned free time away. Here’s to you, readers; our picks this weekend…

  • We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves | Friday, March 18 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $5 | Coco66, New York, NY – Map | This Brooklyn-based band is quite a match against many of our favorite bands – we won’t name names, but we offer them this warning: Look out!! We Can’t Enjoy Ourselves’ charm is rocketing off the scales, and for any types needing a musical reference, think a touch of the Arctic Monkeys, a dash of seamless rockabilly/retro rock n’ roll, and enough melodic/instrumental edge to balance the super-duper adorable factor (which they are, indeed). With The Ugly Club, Abel, and Phantom Power – check out the venue website for more information.
  • The Ex | Friday, March 18 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | $15 | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The Netherlands-based post-punk band is seriously all over the place in terms of genre and mood. It’s so rare that one band is able to master as many genres as possible within one set that we are seriously interested in what they have to offer. Besides, this is their last show in the US before they head across the pond next month… get ‘em while they’re hot, we say. With Death Sentence, Panda and Protect Me - Buy Tickets.
  • Detholz! | Saturday, March 19 | 6:00 pm | 21+ | $5 | Hideout, Chicago, IL – Map | Alt-rock for a new century, the Chicago-based band has an attitude and swagger we can safely admit to having thrown our aspirations towards when we were in the “when I grow up” stage of life. Extremely loyal to their hometown fanbase, and vice versa, there’s no doubt that only their best will be on display this evening. With Rachel Ries – Buy Tickets
  • Capital Cities | Saturday, March 19 | 8:00 pm | $12 | The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA – Map | More from the experimental, ambient front; here comes UK-based electronic outfit Capital Cities. They don’t have much to say, but their music speaks more than volumes contain – cliche, sure, but trust us on this one. With Alex Kemp, Audiafauna, Indigo Child and Ben Osipo – Buy Tickets.
  • Snowmine | Sunday, March 20 | 8:00 pm | 21+ | $7 | Cake Shop, New York, NY – Map | The uber-ambient fivesome’s list of ingredients includes pop, shoegaze, and long lonesome trips through the woods… or so they would have you think. They are the new inspiration behind mood-enhancing, mood-extracting, mood-enforcing music and find theirs a very clever demonstration all around. With Uncles – tickets at the door; for more information, call (212) 253-0036.

Those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To See List this weekend?
