Kill Your Darlings Video for ‘Everybody Else’ Review

Written on April 24, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

I woke up this morning in a little bit of a funk.  I rolled out of bed, made a cup of peppermint tea and started to reflect a little bit on my past.  Invariably, I was met with images of both positivity and negativity, some lovely and others heart wrenching.  I checked my inbox, and found the video for Kill your Darlings, and, as I watched the visual interpretation of the melody, felt oddly at peace with my decisions in life.

There’s something about this video that adds to the song, and that might be the redeeming factor for Kill Your Darlings.  With added indie grace and charm, we see shots of the love crossed songstress walking in a wooded grove, tightly clutching to a peach colored balloon bunch on a cloudy day, and strumming soulfully on a guitar.

Don’t be fooled by the dreamy imagery, though.  The bittersweet vocals are backed by mellow guitar parts and unique backing vocals midway through, giving an added depth to the song.  It’s a tried and true formula.  Girl meets boy, boy turns out to be less than ideal (to put it nicely), girl writes a sultry indie pop song about it.  It might be a little cheesy at times, but it’s definitely something we can all relate to.

Check out the video for the Kill Your Darlings track “Everybody Else” below.  Do you think this is a fresh take on indie pop or just another song like everybody else?

Directors: Camille Radocchia & Oliver Hecks
