Missy Elliott Diagnosed With Graves’ Disease

Written on June 25, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

Missy Elliott has revealed that shes been suffering from the autoimmune disorder Graves disease since 2008.

According to Billboard.com, Elliot reportedly disclosed details of the diagnosis with People Magazine, saying that the symptoms, which affects the thyroid and causes mood swings and weight loss, affected her quickly and unexpectedly.

The disease causes hyperthyroidism, which produces an excess of the thyroid hormone, causing the symptoms Elliott discussed, plus anxiety, fatigue, double vision and muscle weakness.

Elliots condition worsened to the point where she almost wrecked her car.

I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldnt keep the brake down and almost crashed, Elliott said.

I couldnt write because my nervous system was so bad I couldnt even use a pen.

If caught early and treated properly, enduring health effects can be sidestepped. Doctors arent specifically sure of what causes Graves, but the condition can be treated with beta-blockers, antithyroid medications, radiation and surgery.

Word is that the 39-year-old Elliott has been going through radiation and exercising, which has improved her condition.

Im 30 pounds lighter because Ive been exercising. Elliott continues.

My thyroid is functioning, so I havent had to take medication in about nine months. [But] you live with it for the rest of your life.

The Billboard report also points out that the pop/hip-hop star is working on new music with longtime friend and collaborator Timbaland.
