Feature: Tift Merritt: Stories To Tell

Written on June 30, 2011 by Dylan Ferguson

Ever since Tift Merritt debuted with Bramble Rose in 2002, critics and journalists have attempted to align her with specific musical trends or fellow artists, such as Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams or Caitlin Cary, but by doing so, they missed the mark. Certain comparisons are absolutely valid and justified– it’s not as if Merritt’s music exists in a vacuum– but by compartmentalizing her sound and the breadth of her work as mentioned, so much of the magic that makes Tift Merritt’s music come alive is missed. Even at her most accessible, she’s somewhat of an enigma, seamlessly weaving between genres to create songs that mine an emotional depth so rarely found with such consistent triumph. Underwood, Stars Align At ACM Lifting Lives Camp

Written on June 30, 2011 by Dylan Ferguson

Carrie Underwood turned in one of the most-talked about performances with Steven Tyler at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards. Three months later, though, it was another performance that night in Las Vegas that was on her mind.

Underwood met with participants in the ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp this week. Developmentally disabled campers who attended the session last year joined Darius Rucker on stage during the awards telecast in April, an emotional highlight on a night with a lot of strong performances.

“Just what a special thing that was,” Underwood said. “Everybody sitting in the audience and for everybody sitting at home, and obviously the campers on stage, they were loving every single second of it.”

The campers were scheduled to reprise that song Friday night at the Grand Ole Opry with Rucker and perform another song they wrote and recorded during the camp, which was founded by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. Read full post…

Justin Timberlake Comes To Myspace’s Rescue

Written on June 30, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

I guess because he played a guy that helped to relaunch Facebook on a national scale in The Social Network, it was announced yesterday that Justin Timberlake became a minority shareholder in the $35 million buyout of the struggling MySpace.

According to The AV Club:

“But despite Timberlake’s small financial stake, he reportedly will have a major role in shaping MySpace’s future, which will focus on creating places for independent bands to make themselves out to be way more famous than they actually are.”

As if being saturated with a blitzkrieg of trailers, ads and billboards for Timberlake’s horrible new Friends With Benefits film wasn’t enough, the guy is now dipping his toe into social networking (pun not intended).  I mean, sure, we all liked him as an SNL host, and it’s fun now and again to joke about back in the day when he would wear denim suits to award ceremonies and stuff, but come on—he’s everywhere now.  It’s as if this is all part of a five-point plan for global domination.  He’s already done music, TV, film, and social networking.  If this guy writes a book, we’re screwed.

What do you think of Timberlake’s involvement in MySpace?

Fabolous Shows Off Portrait Tattoo of Son

Written on June 29, 2011 by Lucy Coughlan

Just like many rappers, Fabolous has a fondness for getting inked. The Brooklyn rhymer made a visit to West Coast tattoo veteran Mister Cartoon to sit under the gun and what he came out with was a piece of art with a special meaning.

The ‘You Be Killin ‘Em’ creator sought out the famed artist to have him tattoo a portrait of his son, Johan on his right upper arm. The three-year-old is dressed in a suit and bowtie, and sits atop an angel, who holds a ribbon bearing his name.

Fabolous took to Twitter to debut his new artwork. “My new tatt work done by the world famous .. My #PrinceJoso… Read full post…

1,500 people evacuated in London hotel fire

Written on June 29, 2011 by Koby Jeffery

A fire at London’s Park Lane Hilton hotel forced the evacuation of about 1,500 people including the front man of rock group Black Eyed Peas.

Around 20 firefighters were sent to the luxury hotel early Friday evening after the fire department received reports of smoke in a second-floor kitchen vent and in the basement.

The Daily Mail newspaper published pictures of Black Eyed Peas singer Will-i-am walking out of the hotel, covering his mouth with the top of his T-shirt.
