Fred Prouser/ReutersShowtime has been promoting “House of Lies” for what seems like the better part of a year, so there was a lot of anticipation for Sunday night’s series premiere.
But the show, about a team of management consultants led by Marty (Oscar-nominated actor and executive producer Don Cheadle), crammed a lot of plot into the first episode. So much so that there really wasn’t any time left for two of Marty’s employees, played by Ben Schwartz and Josh Lawson, to shine.
Much of the focus was on Marty himself. It’s not entirely clear from the promos, but after watching the show, Cheadle is perfectly cast as the slick Marty Kaan. Read full post…

A veteran standup comic familiar to “Comedy Central” TV viewers and club patrons across the country has been sworn in as mayor of his economically struggling hometown in southwestern Ohio.
The Hillsboro Times-Gazette reports that Drew Hastings was sworn in Monday as Hillsboro’s mayor by Ohio Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell.
The comedian struck a serious tone in his inaugural speech in the city about 50 miles east of Cincinnati. He said people questioned his motive in running for mayor. But Hastings says it was simply concern for Hillsboro.
Hastings says there has been a “disconnect” between residents and city leaders and he intends to change that.
The comedian says he plans to use his visibility to promote job growth and help lure employers to Hillsboro. Read full post…

For ‘War Horse,’ Steven Spielberg opted for real animals, not CGI in stunt scenes
Andrew Cooper/AP Jeremy Irvine stars as a young Englishman who enlists after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry.
It might have been easier to use a real great white shark in the filming of “Jaws” than to have shot the sweeping battle sequences of “War Horse” using real animals.
That’s just what Steven Spielberg, however, decided to do.
